Maidstone and its surrounds

Usually referred to as the County Town being the home of the Kent County Council headquarters.

Maidstone sits on the River Medway which was an important means of transport from the centre of Kent up to the River Thames at Sheerness and from there, westwards into London and eastwards out to the British coast and Europe. It was an important market town and lies at the foot of the North Downs where the Pilgrims Way passes. This was a significant route for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury.

Maidstone has adjusted with the times and is popular with shoppers and diners alike with many good retail outlets. Two popular retail centres are Fremlins Walk and The Mall.

Maidstone is a popular area to live having a selection of state, grammar and private schools.

Just a few miles from the centre of town, agriculture, quarrying and the manufacture of paper became important industries locally and around these many villages grew and prospered.

Many villages have retained their charm and continue to thrive with a good range of amenities. Others, for one reason or another, have not kept pace but most still retain their charm and are popular places to live.

Page & Wells sell properties in all of these villages and residential areas. For those who don’t know the area that well, the following information may be of use and interest. Space does not allow us to mention every village and the information is believed to be correct at the time of going to press.

When using the information provided, please appreciate the following:

DISTANCES.
These have been calculated mainly using Google maps. Distances cannot be guaranteed and are provided for guidance only. They should be checked if accuracy is important.

EDUCATION.
Not every school can be mentioned or listed and property purchasers must make their own enquiries with individual schools to establish admissions criteria for the areas they are interested in. The site www.schoolguide.co.uk may prove useful to purchasers moving into the area.

RETAIL.
Information is given in good faith and the availability of nearby shops is not necessarily an indicator of the popularity of an area. However, it is likely to be important for those who rely on public transport.

TRANSPORT.
We have included what we hope is useful information on distances to motorway junctions and railway stations. We have not included buses because routes and stopping points can be changed without our knowledge. More information is available from www.arrivabus.co.uk/kent-and-surrey
